Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente was promoted to Lusophone Capital of Culture in 2003. It is the most cultural island of the country, where various cultural activities take place throughout the year, namely the Carnival and the Baía das Gatas music festival, which hosts a large number of artists, tourists and emigrants from all over the world. It is the land that saw the birth of Cesária Évora, one of the greatest exponents of Cape Verdean musical culture along with other renowned artists and performers such as Bana, Ildo Lobo, Tito Paris, among others. Mindelo is home to Porto Grande, a deep-water port that can accommodate transatlantic ships and which, because it is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, has served as a port of call for ships from all over the world for centuries. This has helped Mindelo to become a very cosmopolitan city, as it has received sailors from all over the world. This port receives tourists from all over the world through cruise ships that dock there to supply and show the crew and travellers the delights of the earth.
São Vicente is also an island of sun and heat, with delightful white sandy beaches, with a welcoming people who welcome their visitors with music and “Morabeza”.
